Global telecom carriers are now facing a significant decrease trend in their basic communication service revenues as much as 30 percent drop-off in Short Message Service (SMS), 20 percent in international voice, and 15 percent in roaming.
At the same time, Over-the-top (OTT) players, which provide apps and content directly to consumers over the Internet, step up their prevalence, even in message and voice services. For instance, WhatsApp, Viber, and Apple s iMessage represent more than 80 percent of all message traffic, while Skype accounts for more than a third of all international voice traffic minutes. Those are what we called the Internet of Things (IoT). The term was first coined by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the late of 1990s to depict an environment that enables people to live with all devices remotely connected to the Internet. The IoT will surely transform how we live our lives.
A fast-growing business site, Business Insider (BI), called IoT the next industrial revolution as it will disrupt and change the way all businesses, governments, and consumers interact with the physical world. BI notes nearly $6 trillion will be spent on IoT solutions over the next five years.
The US-based technology research company, Gartner, predicts that by 2020 there will be $309 billion in incremental revenue opportunity for IoT suppliers. With these numbers, it is undoubted that IoT is not merely a trend. It is the future of telco industry.
Connectivity is the keyword of business as the Internet is unconditional requirement for making smart devices work properly. That is why telecom is the heart of IoT.

In addition, cloud-based IoT will create a community of vendors and enterprises linked together through data flows to monetize such an expected digital transformation. By this way, IoT is going to be a thriving business for the following years. It offers an infinite market for telecom carriers, providers, data centers, apps developers, content companies, and others.
