Securing Dependable Global Connectivity Amid Covid-19 Congestion
Demand for connectivity has continued to surge on a global basis, driven by end user demand as well as B2B demand from the accelerating cloud business. Cloud usage, including Google, grew 45% year-on-year in Q3 over the previous year Q3 numbers.
This has resulted in surging traffic congestion, compounded by the fact that data is now much more globally distributed. For example, users all over the world draw on video content from other parts of the world, resulting in huge amounts of data moving around, all the time.
With these drivers at play, how do you make sure that your business and employees are able to stay connected, and ensure that traffic congestion doesn’t harm your business by making your products and services unavailable online? How to ensure robust global connectivity for your business
Businesses need to carefully examine their connectivity providers in the current climate to make sure that their providers are able to offer robust support in this current climate, as spiking video and cloud usage has resulted in a global capacity shortage.
To make this more challenging, this global capacity shortage has been compounded by infrastructure delays due to COVID-19. COVID-19 simultaneously accelerated massive demand while causing delays on infrastructure manufacturing and building due to travel obstacles and work limitations. Some cable vendor manufacturing facilities even had to shut down.
In addition, the rising geo-political tensions in Asia have made it more important than ever to consider providers with diverse routing. Although operators generally stay neutral, such geo-political developments do have the potential to affect expansion and operations. As such, businesses would be well advised to consider connectivity providers that are able to offer different routes.
How can you diversify your global connectivity?
Almost all submarine cables between Asia and the USA run from the seismically active Hong Kong and Sea of Japan area to the West Coast. This area is prone to shipping vessel cuts and earthquakes, and has recently seen increased political tensions.
In order to diversify, it is important to consider providers with diverse routing. For example, Telin’s Indonesia Global Gateway (IGG) and trans-Pacific sea cable segments were built in order to provide a new, direct route between Southeast Asia and the USA, that no longer needs to route through East Asia.
The IGG backbone runs from Singapore all the way to Manado, Indonesia, where it connects with the United States (SEA-US) cable running across the Pacific Ocean and landing in California, USA. The other end of the IGG connects in Singapore with the Southeast Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE5) cables. Thus, Telin offers the only route connecting Asia to the USA that does not go through the disruption prone area of South China Sea, Luzon Strait and Japan, where cables frequently experience cutting and breakage.
Users of Telin’s SEA-US network are able to experience the lowest time delay compared to the existing route, as it only requires three hops to connect from Singapore to the US. Moreover, the SEA-US route directly connects with countries in Western Europe, Middle East, and Central Asia through the Indonesia Global Gateway (IGG) and then to the Western Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia (SEA-ME-WE5) cabling route.
The SEA-US route also places Southeast Asia at the centre of these cable systems, as was cited by MT Suen from China Mobile International during Telin Insights 3, “Asia will be the highest potential area in the future, since population in Asia are large and the technology keep on growing. So, traffic countries are going to be the highest potential. Therefore, innovation and technology are the key”. Henceforth, emphasizing the region’s importance in this integrated global communications network and also improving the region’s connection with the rest of the world.
In addition, Telin also proactively partners with other players in the system to ensure that it can serve you as our end customers and users optimally for the maximum number of eyeballs, even as it continues to invest in new infrastructure development.
