SD-WAN, A Cost-Effective Solution for Higher Uptime

Posted by Briana from Telin on Sep 13, 2021 7:27:41 PM

Without a doubt, the demands on enterprise infrastructure have increased exponentially especially with work-from-home policies. But keeping up with these requirements have become major challenge for many, even as the cost of downtime has increased.
Information Technology Intelligence Consulting (ITIC) data shows that 85% majority of corporations now require a minimum of 99.99 uptime for mission critical hardware, an increase of four (4) percentage points from ITIC’s 2017 – 2018 Reliability survey. These requirements reflect the rising costs for downtime, with ITIC’s latest 2019 study reporting that one in three organizations say the cost of a single hour of downtime is over US$1 million.

The message is clear: in today’s Digital Age of “always on” interconnected networks, near-flawless and uninterrupted connectivity is essential for business sustainability. So how are business coping, especially small and medium-businesses?

Network Virtualization in the form of SD-WAN

Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is one solution to boost connectivity that has become increasingly popular. SD-WAN solutions work by simply placing another layer of virtual network on top of a company’s existing Wide Area Network (WAN), improving connectivity and resilience without needing to change the underlying network.

Unsurprisingly, the market size of SD-WAN reached 1 Billion (USD) in 2019, and Global Market Insight forecasts that the market for SD-WAN solutions is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 60% between 2020 and 2026 as organizations seek to boost performance while simplifying network management through this simple software overlay.

Enterprises Success Stories

In order to serve clients, Telin has strategically partnered with VMware, a specialist in digital solutions and virtualization, to deliver reliable, high-performance network virtualization solutions for clients. VMware has a solid track record of deploying SD-WAN solutions to improve connectivity quickly and flexibility.

As an example, one large retail company with more than 500 Internet-connected sites and numerous cloud-based work applications in use was able to streamline its network infrastructure using VMWare’s SD-WAN. The company was struggling with the complexity of managing security, cloud resource access, and cloud application performance across multiple sites.

Once the SD-WAN was in place, the number of VPN tunnels required dropped from 2500 to 5, and application access from branch offices to cloud locations was optimized by leveraging cloud-based gateways. The company could moreover add new cloud applications and manage their existing activity at the click of a mouse, all with upgraded security.

In another case, Cemstone, a US-based company in the concrete business with over 90 sites needed to quickly upgrade its legacy infrastructure to become more connected between all its present and future sites. This was particularly important given that concrete is perishable. By deploying VMware SD-WAN Edge devices at every site, Cemstone was able to more efficiently connect its locations. Comparing to its cost of running MPLS and copper-connected networks at select sites, Cemstone’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) was reduced by more than 50% after switching to SD-WAN—while enjoying more reliable connectivity.

Why Partner with Telin

Telin offers several levels of SD-WAN cloud-based services in collaboration with our partner VMware, all of which are backed by a global private backbone, with multiple Points of Presence around the globe and more than 200,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable.

Telin is backed by the resources of parent company Telkom, Indonesia’s largest telco and State-Owned Enterprise. Clients therefore have the benefit of broad global network coverage, integration with Telkom group’s network services, relationships with Global Carriers, direct connection to major cloud providers, an optional MRC (Monthly Recurring Charge) billing scheme and 24/7 support

Clients can choose the SLA they require in line with their requirements and budget, with options consisting of:

  • Basic SD-WAN Connectivity, backed by support and analytics
  • Premium SD-WAN offering SaaS optimization and higher bandwidth
  • Advanced SD-WAN with enhanced WAN mid-mile using telco backbone, and intelligent DMPO routing
